Are You Conscious?

People seem to find comfort in the familiar whether it 's a favorite chair in a certain place in front of the television or a pillow placed 'just so' in order to sleep. How about you, do you live in a comfort zone?
Do you find that when you go to your favorite restaurant that you order the same thing time and again? Do you find that when you are buying new shoes that they look very similar to the shoes that you are replacing? Do you always drive the same route to work and to run errands?
These things are all done unconsciously and habitually. For the most part, you half thought about each situations once and plugged into your inner auto-pilot.
Let me invite you to be consciousness.
This week don't do anything until you've taken a minute to look at what your going to do and ask yourself the following questions:
1. What am I going to need to reach the objective?
2. Are there items on my way to reach that objective that I will pass and should gather?
3. What is the quickest way to effectively reach that objective?
4. Are there any other objectives that I can reach along the way?
Here 's an example of what I mean. I recently watched an employee perform the simple task of making a sandwich. He walked from his office to the far side of the kitchen to get out the bread. He came back to the refrigerator, that he passed going to the bread, to get lunch meat and mustard, then returned to his bread to assemble the sandwich. Of course he reversed the aforementioned steps to put away is groceries. He was in his comfort zone, he goes through this same process everyday. (sigh)
If he took a second to be conscious of the task in front of him the sandwich making process would look more like this:
1. Walk to the refrigerator and gather lunch meat and mustard
2. Get the bread that is now stored in the cabinet next to the refrigerator
3. Stand in one spot, make the sandwich and put away the food.
As for our fourth point of achieving objectives along the way this fellow could take his morning coffee cup to the kitchen with him and bring his boss back a sandwich as he passes the door. ;o)
This is a simple, but effective, example of becoming conscious. If you can save the time and energy of walking the length of a kitchen four times to make a sandwich, having to make a second trip to the kitchen to deliver a dirty cup, then you have that time to reach other objectives. You are realistically adding time to your day if you apply these simple thoughts to everything you do.
What could you do if you had another hour of productive time in your workday? Could you take on additional clients, make more money? What if you had another hour in your leisure time? Would you enjoy that time getting to better know your spouse and children, or perhaps take up a new hobby?
The rewards can be as amazing as you make them!
Let me invite you to be consciousness.
