How to Maintain Dieting Motivation
Some of us are more motivated to lose weight than others. If you are on and off diets frequently you may have a problem with your dieting motivation. Most people have no trouble with motivation in the beginning, but as time goes by this wanes until we are asking ourselves, "why bother?"
If this sounds like you then maybe you can use a little help to maintain your dieting motivation. You can try to exercise and eat right, but if your attitude isn't in the right place chances are you won't stick with your diet. There are some simple steps you can take to improve your attitude and put you in the right frame of mind to stick with the diet.
1. Understanding that losing weight takes time and accepting this fact is the first step to develop dieting motivation. It took months or years to put on the weight, and losing it will not happen overnight. Develop a plan that will work for you long term, and develop the habits to stick with the plan.
2. Next, set small, attainable goals for yourself. For example, if you want to lose 40 pounds don't set a goal to lose it all in 1 month. Instead set a smaller goal, say 10 pounds that you can attain in 3 months time. Setting small, attainable goals helps you keep your dieting motivation high.
3. You also need to understand that there will be times when you experience setbacks. Don't be too hard on yourself! A small slice of cake or sharing a piece of chocolate with your kids is not only ok, but you should use these as rewards for your hard work the rest of the times. If you slip, don't throw your entire diet into the garbage can. Simply start over the following morning. It's as simple as that. Taking this balanced approach will help you maintain your dieting motivation.
4. Having a friend help you with your diet is another good way to keep you on track with your goals. You will go to this person when you need support or to celebrate a victory. Knowing that someone is out there who genuinely cares can make all the difference, and will keep you focused on sticking with your diet.
5. The last tip is how to handle those times when you reach a plateau, and the weight is not coming off as fast. First, know that plateau's are common and simply part of the process. Next, instead of getting down on yourself congratulate yourself for coming this far! Even though you may not be losing pounds you are still having an impact on your body by building muscle or increasing your health, so stick with it. Lastly, consider changing up your diet and/or exercise routine to help you get past the plateau.
It takes a good plan, knowledge, determination, and the proper dieting motivation to be successful losing weight. The rewards for sticking with it can be immeasurable and are part of maintaining a healthy, positively lifestyle and developing positive self esteem. Follow these steps and incorporate them into your plan, they will help keep you on track, focused, and with the proper attitude to maintain the dieting motivation you need to be successful.
