How To Remember Peoples' Names

There is no magic or sharp memory involved in “How to remember people’s names?” In essence, everybody can do it. All it takes is interest and attention. Your name is the single most important word for you and it is always enchanting and enjoyable to hear this one word. We may associate this with human ego or any other plausible reason; but it is true. So much so, that most of us have probably even tried doing a Google search on our own name or family name just out of inquisitiveness.

To be able to recall any name can play a vital role in your success in many ways. For instance, if you meet a girl at a social gathering and just an hour later forget her name; you would be embarrassed to approach her. Perhaps, you have lost your next potential date. One may be faced with a similar situation at your work place, particularly in an important business meeting. This is why it is very significant to learn “How to remember people’s names?” It can make you or break you especially when you are trying to climb up the corporate ladder. Forgetting your new boss’s name is not going to work in your favor. Most of the successful people in major corporations and prominent politicians get to these positions because they have mastered the art of remembering people’s names.

Most of the people do not pay much attention when they get introduced to new people. You may just shake hands without even listening to the other person’s names. That is a terrible habit because you can never remember something you didn’t really hear in the first place. One of the most important factors to learn “How to remember people’s names?” is that you must listen very carefully when people introduce themselves.

Repeat the name you just heard and if you didn’t quite get it, say so without fear. The other aspect of this process is to get more information about the background of a person. You will always find something interesting or peculiar about the person that makes it easier to remember the name. You can even dig into the name’s origin or meaning that can be associated with it. Another technique is to associate the name with a famous celebrity, sports superstar or a renowned politician. For example, the name Elizabeth could be related to movie star Elizabeth Taylor, Richard to President Richard Nixon or Wayne to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and so on. Basically, it boils down to interest and attention and you’ll remember any name.

There may be a situation where you need to remember 10, 15 or even 20 names because they all belong to a certain group or committee. It may seem like a Herculean task at first but it can be achieved using some simple techniques. One of them is to write down the list of names and reading the list a couple of times while looking at the list; and then repeating as much of the list as you can recall, several times without looking at it. “How to remember people’s names?” involves recalling the list without looking at it. We don't memorize by looking at the list, we memorize by recalling as much of the list as we can remember. The same process can be repeated as many times as required to correct our mistakes and reading the items that we forgot. With some patience, eventually you will get there and be able to recall the complete list without mistakes.
