Definition of a Champion
I’ve been wondering what differentiates a champion from a less noteworthy person; someone who does what it takes to achieve great things and dives repeatedly to the bottom of the ocean for the treasures hidden there, versus someone who just bobs along in the water like a jellyfish and never dives for the pearls.
We’re all made of exactly the same stuff, we all have virtually the same brains, and the key characteristic that separates us from those lower down in the food chain; the ability to choose.
Despite our relatively large brains and ability to think, plan, reason and use our imagination, some of us are not content to just be a jellyfish shifting with the tide. A few of us, obviously, are sharks, but many of us (an ever-increasing number) are more like dolphins. Dolphins are champions.
If we look up the word ‘champion’ in the Oxford dictionary, is gives these definitions:
a) person who fights, argues and champions for another, or for a cause
b) athlete, beast and champion who has defeated all competitors
c) first-class, prime
Dolphins are playful, intelligent, gregarious, interactive, and life is joyful. We mean no one harm, we are just filled with a ‘joie de vive’ that is unmatched and we never rest. We are happiest when we are able to help someone. Sharks are our enemies, and we attack them to protect ourselves or others. We take jellyfish in stride, and harbour no grudge toward them, but don’t really understand them. They don’t know how to play! They don’t truly think! Life is a waste to a jellyfish. What will they have to show for it when their time is done? Whose life have they bettered?
I actually feel sorry for the jellyfish of our time. They are missing a key component of human life. They are stuck in a belief that all they are capable of is drifting with the tide. If, at some point, a weaker person comes along that they can prey on, they may do so without conscience, but they never PLAN to accomplish anything. Life just happens to them. Sometimes a predator means their early demise, but they don’t plan for it.
How do I know jellyfish so well? I used to be one. I use to just float where I believed I was bidden. I had no idea I was capable of grabbing onto something or someone to be pulled along in their wake. For so long I was unaware that I could choose. I could choose to be a dolphin! I could take on sharks and win!
I find it interesting that when I was young and unaware of my choices and power, that I didn’t understand champions as in definition number three. I believed they truly had innate abilities that I didn’t. No one told me otherwise, so I accepted that.
Now that I’m older and wiser, I have accepted my power, use my right to choose, create a better life for myself and set ever higher standards for my own performance, and just don’t understand how people can stay jellyfish any more.
Why, when we have more access to better and richer lives via internet training courses would anyone settle for less than being all they can be? Don’t they believe they deserve it? Don’t they understand they have a choice? Are they playing it down so they don’t make others feel inadequate?
It’s such a waste if we fail to live up to our potential. There are more champions than ever before, flogging their talents at every given opportunity to bugle, “Here I am—I’ve done it, I’m a successful __________ and I’m dying to share with you how you can do it too,†but so many just aren’t interested in bettering themselves.
I’m just one person, but I will continue to do all I can to help jellyfish be dolphins.
