How Can We Avoid the Three Leading Causes of Death?

Tags: , ,

If we keep up with the statistics, we know that the three leading causes of death in the United States are heart disease, cancer, and doctors. Let us look at these three and what we can do to promote better health.

So let us look at the number one killer, heart disease with 29% of the deaths or 700,000 deaths annually. What is it, and what can we do to help prevent it? Coronary artery disease, the most common cause of heart disease occurs slowly as the arteries, which supply blood to the heart, start to narrow and may eventually become blocked. Often, this results in a heart attack.

Sometimes, the heart does not pump well either due to a congenital heart defect or because the valves become damaged, and this can lead to heart failure. Six things we can do to help prevent heart problems are to control blood pressure, lower cholesterol, eat nutritious food, take supplements, do not smoke, and get enough exercise. We can look for natural supplements that can help us lower blood pressure and cholesterol since many of the statin drugs can have damaging side effects such as elevated liver enzymes and muscle weakness. We can look for an Omega 3 supplement, which furnishes 1400 mg. daily of fish oil with over 200 mg. of EPA and over 100 mg. of DHA. Imperative supplements include Vitamins C, E, B6, folate, B12, magnesium, and selenium. As well, we need L-arginine, L-taurine, Hawthorn berry, L-proline, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Co-enzyme Q10. Finding a supplement that contains all of these will save money. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables helps the body be more alkaline; on the other hand, eating red meat causes the body to be more acidic.

The second leading cause of death in the United States is cancer, which accounts for 570,000 deaths. The most obvious change in our lifestyle, if we have not done it, is to quit smoking since cigarette smoking is responsible for 90% of all cases of lung cancer. As well, cigar smoking and pipe smoking increase cancer as does just being around smoke; in fact, second-hand smoke leads to 3000 cases of lung cancer each year. We need to watch what we eat. Mayo Clinic recently released the statement, “30% of all cancers are related to issues of nutrition.”

We are advised to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, especially those high in antioxidants, which fight free radicals---if we are not eating the recommended 5-7 portions daily, which only 10% of our population are doing, we should consider a high-potency liquid supplement with the actual puree, not the juice, of fruits such as the acai and goji berry. We should limit fat, especially from animal sources, and drink in moderation if at all. We need to stay active, and maintain a healthy weight while protecting ourselves from the sun. Since certain cancers are associated with viruses, such as Hepatitis C, we should look for natural supplements that prevent vial replication and have proven to reduce the viral load. We need to avoid chemical exposure such as having our clothes dry cleaned; in addition, we need to find a natural supplement that is not a colon cleanse, but one that takes all the toxins out of the whole body. We can diligently research those natural supplements that help to strengthen the immune system. One such supplement is the Agaricus Blazei Murill mushroom---a hybrid of two varieties of Agaricus is even more powerful.

The third leading cause of death in the United States is doctors. This may be a surprise to you as it was to me when I first heard it. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA Vol 284, July 26, 2000), there are currently more than 250,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes, an unusual word that means “induced in a patient by a physician’s words or actions.” The published breakdown for 1999 is as follows: 12,000 unnecessary surgery, 7000 medication errors in hospitals, 80,000 infections in hospitals, and 106,000 non-error, negative effects of drugs. Not included in this figure are the estimated 80% of the 570,000 cancer deaths that are attributable to cancer “therapy,” resulting from a weakened immune system, often leading to death from pneumonia or other infections which the body is not strong enough to fight off. So the answer here seems to be to find out what we can do to strengthen our immune systems, such as finding natural substances high in beta glucans, which enhance the immune responses through stimulation of macrophages, so we can reduce the likelihood of heart disease, cancer, or viral infections and in so doing can avoid pharmaceuticals and hospitalizations.
