How your Personal Values Drive Your Decisons In Life

The values we have are going to drive our behavior and decisions Now, what if I were to tell you that two people can have the same values yet still make very different decisions and behave very differently.

The reason is because two people can have the same values but still have very different definitions of what these values mean to them. Values mean different things to very different people.

It is only when we find out how we truly define our values that it becomes clear what our hot buttons are. Could it be possible that Madonna and Mother Theresa have the same number one "Towards-Value", success? You could be saying, "How could that be?"

They are such different personalities with such radically different beliefs. Well, this could be because they both define success differently. See, for Madonna her number one value in life could be success. She would do anything to get success. She loves success? But success to her may mean selling 10 million albums.

On the other hand, Mother Theresa may also value success as number one. But to her, her definition may be very different. To her, success could mean feeding 10 million starving children. As such, they make very different choices in their life and produce very different results, although both are successful.

Ask yourself this question, look at your "Towards-Values" and ask yourself. What must happen for me to feel that particular value? For example if your first "Towards-Value" is success, ask yourself, what must happen for me to feel successful?

Our Values Drive Our Decisions

If you have achieved some of your goals, do your values explain why? More importantly if you have felt frustrated about not achieving certain results or goals to your values, do your values also explain why? Do your values explain the kind of decisions you have made in all areas of your life.

If you have a job right now, why are you in the job? For example, if you are a doctor, why did you become a doctor? Do your values explain why? Is it because one of your "Towards-Values" is making a difference? Helping people?

Right now, if you are a businessman, if you are an entrepreneur, do your values also explain why you made those decisions? Is it because what is very important to you is the sense of freedom, making your own decisions, being empowered? At the same time, if you always wanted to start a business but never got around to do it, do your "Away-From values" explain why?

Could it be because a big "Away-From value" which you want to avoid all the time is a sense of failure, fear of failure for example. How about your family? Do your values explain the decisions you have made in your family? That if you have got married, do your values explain why?

And if you did not get married, do your values also explain why you did not get married? And if you are married, do you have children? Do your values explain some of the decisions you have made?

How about the state of your health right now? The fact that do you go to gym? Do you exercise regularly? Or do not you? Do your values explain why you have made those decisions?

We could go on and on with never-ending examples. The point is, get clear on your values! Our values certainly have a great impact on our lives affecting our decisions and actions we take in life.
