Angora Cat and Kitten Information

The Angora cat has its roots in the Ankara region of Turkey. Ankara is also celebrated a unique breed of goats with long hair, which is of extremely fine quality. Angora cats are known for having a soft white coat, though the colors can range from black to blue to reddish.

Angora cats are also known as Turkish Angoras. On prominent feature is dual eye color, where one eye is blue to light blue while the other is an amber color. The dual eye color does not appear in every Angora cats. Like many cats found in the Middle East and Western Asia, the Angora or Ankara is aid to have originated in Egypt.

Angora cats are known for being intelligent and curious. They like the company of humans and can be quite affectionate. Unlike other domesticated cats, Angoras enjoy the water and are able to swim.

Like the Egyptians, Angora cats are great favorites with the Turks and Armenians. Blue eyes and a pure white coat are thought to be the ideal. There has long been a legend that the eye color can indicate hearing ability. It has been thought that in dual color cats, a blue eye was an indication of deafness.

Important physical points include a small head with a medium length snout and nose. The appearance of the Angora is accented by large, full eyes that can be slightly almond- shaped. The legs are of moderate length, and in proportion to the body. The tail is long and curves upward and forward across the back. The hair should be very long at the base, less so toward the tip.

In manner and temper they are quiet, sociable, and docile, though given to roaming, especially in the country, where they have been seen far from their homes, hunting more like dogs than cats; nor do they appear to possess the keen intelligence of the short-haired European cat.

Health

Cats who reside in the house should generally visit the veterinarian yearly, unless health problems are evident. Cats who enjoy the outdoors may need to see the vet as many as four times a year. When you take your cat to the vet, be sure to bring along a fresh stool sample so the vet can do a fecal exam to check for internal parasites such as tapeworm, round worm, whip worms and hook worms. The vet will also check for external parasites such as fleas, ticks and ear mites. The vet check should include a dental examination and if necessary a cleaning. Cats who are eight years of age or older are considered geriatric and additional blood and urine tests may be necessary to screen for any health problems. At about six months of age, the kitten should also be examined for sexual maturity and decisions about birth control should be made.

Angora Kittens

Kittens are generally available and the price depends upon bloodlines color and markings. Unlike puppies, kittens should not be separated from their mother until twelve to sixteen weeks of age. Some very important developmental stages occur during this period including emotional, mental and health. Curtailing this development can lead to medical and behavioral problems. Kittens separated from their mother at too young an age often fail to gain weight fast enough, have immune system problems because they have not had enough mothers milk, have eating and eliminating problems, and can have problems socializing with other cats and with people.
