Dog Collars - More Than Just A Fashion Statement

Fashion has gone to the dogs - literally! Today's dog collars are more influenced by the runways of Milan than the plain collars of the past. In fact, many high end designers offer dog collars and leashes, as well as clothing, jackets, booties, hats, and any garment a dog would desire. A tiny dog with a collar from Burberry, Gucci or even Swarovski is a frequent sight everywhere from fashion magazines to the Hollywood Hills.

From the rich and famous to the common dog lover, you have a wide array of choices when it comes to your dog's only essential accessory. Here are some clues to guide you to the right collar for your pampered pet.

Safety First and Foremost

The most important consideration when buying a collar is to get the proper size for your dog.
There are several ways to choose the appropriate size:

- A dog collar should fit snugly without choking your animal. The general guideline is that a standard collar should fit around the dog's neck and allow you to fit two fingers underneath the collar without choking your dog.

- If you are buying a slip collar or choke chain, measure the circumference of your dog's neck then add 3 inches. Make sure that there is enough slack for the chain to release fully after a correction.

Make sure to adjust the collar as your dog grows, checking the fit frequently while they are a puppy since they can grow very quickly. As soon as a collar becomes too tight, move to the next size. Keep in mind that some breeds have very broad necks and shoulders, so a collar may slip over their head even when properly fitted. If this is an issue, consider a harness instead of a traditional collar. Also note that collars should be taken off when your dog is crated.

Basic Dog Collars

Traditionally, collars are made out of either leather or nylon. A leather collar is very strong but can stretch, especially if it is frequently exposed to water. A nylon collar is more durable and comes in a range of colors. However, it can tear and wear down eventually. Any collar should be checked periodically for damage and secure fit. If the collar seems to be wearing out or has begun to split, invest in a new collar.

There are also many different types of clasps depending on the collar. A buckle collar is secure and traditional but can be difficult to secure on a rambunctious dog. If you are planning on taking off the collar frequently, a plastic clasp with a quick release is easy but weaker than a metal buckle. If your dog will be outside frequently and allowed to roam alone, a collar with a breakaway clasp is a very good idea. This collar has a clasp that will break if the dog becomes stuck on something, such as a tree branch, and thus reduce any choking dangers.

Designer Dog Collars

For dog owners that want style above and beyond a plain nylon collar, the options are endless. It is a good idea to fit your dog with a plain collar first to get an idea of sizing. Then you can browse pet boutiques and the millions of options available online to your heart's content.

For dogs that spend most of their time indoors, a fashion collar is generally not an issue. If you do plan on leaving your dog outside for any length of time, make sure that the collar you choose is durable and able to withstand the elements, as well as normal wear and tear. Also, beware of accessories that may break off and be swallowed by your dog, as they may pose choking hazards.

Otherwise, indulge your whims - from colors to patterns to sparkles to crystals, your dog can have a collar for every occasion and even match your own accessories!
