Dog Training - Using Your Voice As A Training Tool
Your puppy was born to understand canine communication. Dogs naturally understand the body language, facial expressions and verbal expressions of other dogs. When a puppy is taken from his mother and introduced to his human family, he has the task of having to translate everything that he sees and hears around him into his language.
The puppy's new human family also faces challenges as well. Simply put, we don't think like dogs. We think like humans. Humans have the huge challenge of trying to make a new puppy understand and do what they want. So in essence, the puppy must think like we think. This takes lots of time and patience and effective training.
The most important dog training tool that you will use when training your puppy to think like you is your voice. If you want your puppy to be trained effectively, you absolutely must teach your puppy to listen to and to respect your voice. Your puppy must respond to all of your verbal commands. Your puppy must be clear that you are in charge. You must establish yourself as the "alpha dog" by using your voice.
If you do not teach your puppy to respect your voice starting from the first day that you bring him home, your puppy will grow into a dog that never listens to you. You will not be able to take him anywhere and you will never be able to let him walk loose without a leash.
You must train your dog to respond to your voice immediately. This will not happen, however, if you scream at your dog all of the time. Screaming is ineffective and shows that you lack control. You must have a certain tone that you use when you are correcting your dog and when you want his immediate attention. Even if you are soft spoken, you can vary your tone so that your dog will know when you want his immediate attention.
You must have a certain tone of voice that will let your dog know when you mean business. And this tone of voice should not be similar in any way to the tone that you use to praise your dog. There must be a clear distinction between the two tones.
Also, you must be serious when correcting your puppy. Do not smile, giggle, hug and pet your puppy immediately after correcting him. Many people do this because the puppy is "so cute" and the puppy's cuteness causes the owner to feel bad when correcting him. If you do this, you will lose all authority.
Just like children learn at an early age how they can manipulate their parents, puppies learn very early what they can and can not get away with. Just as it is easy to tell when parents have absolutely no control over their child, it is easy to tell when dog owners have no control.
Your voice is key if you want respect and control. If you teach your puppy early to respect your voice, you will never feel the need to resort to screaming or hitting to get control.
If your dog is already out of control and does not respect your voice, don't feel discouraged. You can start on the path to establishing yourself as the "alpha dog" today. It is never too late to train your dog to listen to and respect your voice.
