Taking A Ride: Dog Accessories And Necessities

You and your dog both love the great outdoors. Sometimes, you travel far afield to explore new places and unfrequented paths. Other times, you decide to include your beloved pet on a road trip or opt to take him or her with you on vacation. Whatever the occasion, you need to plan ahead to ensure your pet is comfortable.

A good idea is to put together a traveling box for your pet. It can hold the essentials your pup needs for traveling to and staying in somewhere other than home. Consider what items your pet will require to be safe on the ride and during the stay. Among the various items include bowls, a tin can opener, a lid for any open cans and a spoon. You might also want to add towels and something to use to wash up. Always throw in toys for their amusement. Their favorite or second favorite toys can also increase the comfort level of the dog. It will help lower stress during the ride and at the new place.

You might want to ready the car for your trip. No matter what breed of dog you have, chances are it sheds. It also gets muddy paws and drools. Experienced dog owners either do not worry about this. Like dog hair on clothing, this is a fact of life. If, however, you are using a car which belongs to another person, or have a new car or are simply at the stage where you have not accepted this, there are ways to protect your vehicle. They do not need to be inexpensive. Costs can vary, but there are options.

You can have your pet in a pet crate. This removes all drool and hair from your seats. You can also cover the car seats with an old blanket. This makes the seat more comfortable for your pet. Moreover, it helps with the dirt and drool problems. Depending upon the seat and the blanket, this may not be the best solution. Blankets can slide. Your dog can slide with them. You might decide a car seat saver is better. You can find custom fitted seat covers. They stick to the back seat and do not ruck up. A waterproof blanket is another option.

You can also get your dog to stay in one place. Buy a dog car harness. They protect your pet and yourself if there is an accident. These restraints allow your dog to stand and sit. They do not permit your pet from wandering or jumping.

Take care in selecting the items you choose to take on the average car trip. They need not be bulky, numerous or difficult to use. For longer trips and during hot weather, you should always have on hand a supply of water and a water bowl. Some people bring an empty margarine plastic container. If your dog is riding in a crate, you might want to have non spill plastic water and food bowls. They are light and ideal for cars, motor homes, caravans and other modes of transportation.

An alternative is the collapsible or flat folding bowl. These are perfect for car rides and come in handy for picnics as well as for hikes and walks. Foldable dog bowls are light and can slip easily into a purse, knapsack or bag. Having water and a water bowl is one sure way you can make a car ride pleasant for your pet.
