The Doberman Pinscher is a Fine Dog Breed

It never ceases to amaze me just how interesting the history of many dog breeds are. Lets take a moment to discuss the Doberman Pinscher. Many years ago, during the 1800s, a man named Louis Doberman from Thuringen in Germany had a career of collecting taxes. Every day he would set out on foot and literally walk door-to-door asking people to pay their overdue taxes.

Needless to say, this job was obviously quite rough and Mr. Doberman needed an excellent guard dog to accompany him on his rounds. He then set out with the goal of creating such a breed. The most likely mix came from different dog breeds such as the German Pinscher, Weimaraner, Greyhound, Black & Tan Manchester Terrier and maybe other dog breeds as well.

Soon enough Mr. Doberman gathered the perfect prototype of the breed which today still bears his name. The original Doberman dogs looked a good bit different than today's Doberman Pinschers, with rounder heads and thicker bone structure. Given time, this dog was bred to have a more narrow race-like look like what we're used to today. By the early 1900s, the Doberman Pinscher even had developed its own breed club due to its popularity.

The first Doberman Pinscher came to the United States in the early days of the 1900s. The US and European nations both soon realized that this dog breed was a perfect police dog and guard dog as well. Eventually, it was also used as a war dog. Over time, these natural valuable traits caused this dog breed to become desirable to many household families, in addition to the sleek, defined appearance of this animal. By the year 1977, the Doberman Pinscher was the second most popular dog breed in the United States.

Personality

The Doberman Pinscher is a highly intelligent animal that is one of the most capable guard dogs and watchdogs that a family could ever own. Not only is it a highly dependable family protector, Doberman Pinscher dogs are also one of the most intelligent and easiest dog breeds to train. They are always on high alert and are always ready to serve their masters. The Doberman is also a sensitive dog breed - obedient, loyal and quite reserved with strangers.

Health Information

The Doberman dog breed has an average life span of up to 12 years of age. Veterinarians suggest that owners have these dogs specifically tested for certain things such as hip dysplasia, cardiac issues, eye problems and vWD. Other major health issues that may arise include demodicosis, narcolepsy, gastric torsion, osteosarcoma, PRA, albinism and hypothyroidism.

Tips for Taking Care Of Your Doberman

Doberman Pinschers need much more than average dog as far as daily exercise is concerned. Bundled with enormous pockets of energy, this dog can become very frustrated and even destructive if kept indoors too long without physical or mental stimulation - kind of like a five year old child. Coop them up for too long and sooner or later they're going to lose it.

Be forewarned, families that may be considering getting a Doberman need to be prepared for a lifelong commitment of lots of daily walks and plenty of vigorous exercise outside. Dobies can easily live both outside and inside, as well as in both hot and cold temperatures. Overall, however, it is much more comfortable when it remains inside with its family where it can enjoy being with you too.

If you are looking dog racing, you might consider adopting a retired racing Greyhound. Contrary to popular belief, they do not require huge amounts of exercise.
