Global Warming - 10 Simple Ways To Lower Your Carbon Emissions

Today the global warming situation has been getting a ton of media coverage. Many scientists from all over the world have agreed that the planet has been getting warmer due to many environmental factors. This article will show you a few ways in which you can lower your impact on the environment.

1) Replace Regular Light bulbs.

Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb. These light bulbs use significantly less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save a couple thousand pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Think about this, if every household in the United States replaced one regular light bulb with an energy saving model, we could reduce global warming pollution by more than a couple billion pounds over the life of the bulbs. You will be doing your share to cut back on heat trapping pollution and save money on your electric bills.

2) Install a manual programmable thermostat.

Programmable thermostats will automatically lower the heat or air conditioning at night and raise them again in the morning. They can save you $100 a year on your energy bill. A great tips is to move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer

3) Clean The Air Conditioner.

Clean and replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner. Cleaning a dirty air filter can save about 400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

4) Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases.

Look for the Energy Star label on new appliances to choose the most energy efficient products available. These particular products will help you to save energy on your bill and also help keep the environment clean.

One great point in if each household in the United States replaced its existing appliances with the most energy efficient models available, we would save billions of dollars in energy costs and eliminate a great deal of heat trapping gases.

5) Stop leaving appliances on standby.

Use the on and off function on the machine by itself. A television that has been switched on for many hours a day will use significantly more of its energy in standby mode. In standby mode, the item is still on and burning energy.

Another way to reduce your global warming impact is to unplug the extra refrigerator or freezer you rarely use. This can reduce the typical carbon dioxide emitted by a family by nearly ten percent.

6) Wrap your water heater in insulation material.

You will save approximately one thousand pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple action. You can save a lot more per year by setting the thermostat one degree higher than normal during the winter.

7) Move your refrigerator and freezer to another location.

Placing them next to the boiler will consume much more energy than if they were standing on their own. If you put them in a hot cellar room with a high temperature, energy use is almost doubled and causes an extra amount of carbon dioxide emissions.

8) Defrost old refrigerators and freezers continuously.

An even better option is to replace them with newer models. These will have automatic defrost cycles and are generally up to two times more energy efficient than their previous models. Not only will you have a cleaner appliance, but the newer models will tend to use less energy.

9) Replace single glazed windows with double glazed ones.

This requires a bit of money, but will reduce the energy lost through old windows and pay off in the long term. If you go for the best the market has to offer, you can even save more than half of the energy lost.

10) Cover your pots while cooking food.

Doing this will not only save the energy used to cook the food, but can also keep the area cleaner. It has been shown that you can save over 70% of the energy used on the stove doing this.

Keep in mind that global warming is based on many different factors. The sun has been getting hotter for the past hundred years and our neighboring planets are experiencing this too. If everyone did their part to lower their impact on global warming, we would all be better off. God luck and keep the environment clean.
