Massively Multiplayer Online Games and Subgenres
MMOG is the acronym for Massively Multiplayer Online Games, and have grown in participation in recent years. As the name implies, these games allow huge numbers of players to interact together over the Internet. Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft are two of the recent popular games.
There are quite a few subgenres that fall under the term MMOG, listed here are only the most popular styles of MMOG subgenres.
Role-playing games
MMORPGs are the acronym for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, and are the most popular type of MMOG. These are online computer role-playing games that attract a huge following and allow large collections of players to interact either cooperatively, competitively, or both at the same time. You select an avatar, or visual representation, to identify your player to yourself and other players when in the game playing world. Players, or rather avatars representing players, move about from one vast virtual world to another, where they interact with familiar friends and foes or strangers to get to know. These players then role play any number of actions, including fighting, killing, purchasing items, and carrying on conversations, depending on their and their fellow players roles. MMORPGs are not free and charge a monthly or bi monthly subscription fees, or require players to buy client software.
First person shooter
MMOFPS is the acronym for Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. These are combat computer games, and allow players to engage either as a team or as an individual. A player can accumulate points to use for different purposes depending on the game and what's available, points make the games more interesting over a longer time period, and one has an opportunity to develop their character. Because these games require quick reaction times, slower computers or connections will slow down game play significantly, and make it difficult to fully engage in the enjoyment of this style of game. MMOFPS games also require monthly subscription fees, which covers the cost to the provider for server upkeep and troubleshooting staff.
Real time strategy
MMORTS is the acronym for Massively Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy. These games are usually war type games but are more strategic than just shooting the opponent as he appears in the virtual world. This type of game engages forces rather than players, and combines real time strategy with huge numbers of players online at the same time. One's forces are usually displayed overhead as one plays.
Browser based
BBMMORPG is the acronym for Browser Based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games. These are massively multiplayer games some of which require no downloads and can be played from any computer. Many charge no fees, but have cash shops from which it is necessary to purchase items for playing the games. They utilize the Internet browsers which allow the developers and players to avoid the costs and hassles of creating and downloading clients. They often use 2D graphics or are text-based.
Mobile devices
MMMOG is the acronym for Mobile Massively Multiplayer Online Games. The name says it all. These are games available for mobile devices and are new on the scene but will grow to include all the above styles of games in the near future. Though this is not a genre there are mobile games that utilize the real location of the player as its theme.
