Blokus Game Is Pure Abstract Strategy Fun

I first spied Blokus game in the local mall in my home town. This was a couple of years ago, and there was a Kiosk set up at Christmas time that had all sorts of games.

Alot of these games were new to me, but the one that stood out the most was Blokus. This was due to it's colorful packaging that really grabbed my eye.

So I purchased it for my 10 year old grandson, then we along with my 6 year old grand daughter enjoyed many exciting times playing it. Since there was just the three of us, and since there is 4 colors and sides, we took turns on the odd color out. This fun game probably plays easier with 4 players or two, but if you only have 3 players that is not a problem at all.

Regarding my grand daughter playing, if you have younger children yourself, don't worry if they can't yet read, as reading is not required. Also basically the only rule is that your pieces can only touch at the corners of your other pieces.

Your pieces can not touch another players pieces as well. These are pretty simple concepts and not really difficult for a young child to grasp.

So if you are board game enthusiast and you haven't yet played this fun game, you should give it a try. Though challenging, it is a simple game to learn the rules of and an easy game to play.

But it excitingly fun! Blokus game has been touted as one of the most awarded games of the 21st century. It is good for developing concepts of spacial relationships, and you also learn to play defensively and offensively as well.

You play on a colorful board that has 20 rows and 20 columns. There is a total of 400 squares. You are going to be placing your game tiles on the board during the game, and how you do it, determines if you win.

There are 84 tiles in all, devided into 21 shapes, which are very unique with colors of yellow, red, green and blue. I am not going to give you all the technical names for these shapes, as I am sure you have probably never heard of tetrominoes or pentominoes. I know I had not before I played and it is really not important to know anyway.

There are several different versions of Blokus game. You have Classic, Travel, Trigon, 3D and Giant. Alot of people do not consider the travel version a travel version at all. They consider it a 2 player version. Some people prefer playing with only one other player as it seems more like playing chess to them.

You can have fun for hours playing, and the outcome is never certain. But what is certain is that you will be challenged and tested regarding your competitive skill and your will to dominate, subdue and ultimately win over your opponents.

To win, you want to avoid getting blocked where you can't put down any more of your peices. If you get blocked by another player early on, you will be out of the game.

An inexperienced player may try to seal off their area, but this doesn't usually work as pieces can only be connected by their corners, so players can usually find an opening to pass through. Instead, a better strategy would be to try and expand into as many other players areas as possible.

You also want to try place your larger pieces early in the game, starting with 5 square and 4 square tiles and save your smaller tiles for the later stages of the game. The reason is, early in the game it is easier to put the larger pieces on the board.

You don't want to get in a spot where your pieces are to big to put on the open slots of the board. Also when the spaces start to fill up, it is easier to place the smaller pieces, especially the little 2 and 1 square tiles.

This game is definately ideal for family game night. There are reviews on some sites that just praise to the high heavens this fun game.

It is not one of those crazy fast paced games that can be exciting in their own right. It is also not one of those games where you sit around waiting for ever for the next player to move.

Blokus game is fun and somewhat addicting to play, but that only means you are having a great time and there is nothing wrong with that, right?
