The Terminator Trilogy Revisted - Just in Time for T4
Fans of the Terminator movies are eagerly anticipating the release of the fourth installment of the series, T-4. But in case you've missed an episode, lets quickly go over what has happened in the first 3 Terminator movies.
The first Terminator movie introduces us to Sarah Connor, who is apparently being targeted for death by an unknown assailant. Sarah is rescued by Kyle Reese who shares a fantastical story about the Terminator who has come from the future to kill Sarah to keep her from giving birth to John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance in the year 2029.
Kyle has been sent back from that year to keep Sarah safe and ensure that John is born. Sarah goes along with Kyle who keeps her safe from the Terminator whom they believe they have destroyed. An interesting twist in the plot is the fact that John Connor has sent Kyle back not only to protect his mother but to become his father. Kyle does not survive the mission to go on to become part of the Terminator II film.
Terminator II, or as it is fondly referred to, T2, introduces us to John Connor the unruly teenager. A new Terminator is introduced to the story, the T-1000, a deadly new model that can take the shape and characteristics of anyone with whom he has come in contact. The T-1000 has come back in time to kill John Connor. The original model of the Terminator is also sent back, but in a new capacity. This time he's been sent back by the resistance to save John from his potential assassin.
The Terminator and teenage John Connor free Sarah from a mental institution where she is being held after telling her story of robot assassins from the future. Afterward, Sarah, thinking she can stop Judgment Day from happening by killing the scientist who started the technology goes to try to murder the unsuspecting scientist, Miles Dyson.
John and his new friend, the old model Terminator, manage to stop Sarah from killing Miles just in time and he joins them in their efforts to stop Judgment Day from happening. An attack on the company Miles Dyson works at, Cyberdyne (the company whose technology led to the creation of the Terminators and eventually Judgment Day) ensues. During the incredible military siege between the Terminator, John and Sarah and the massive amount of police who show up during the battle, Miles Dyson is killed for his efforts and the building is destroyed.
Unfortunately, the new T-1000 Terminator is still in pursuit of John Connor and his protectors. The chase culminates in a fight at a factory. Again the old and new Terminators battle until liquid nitrogen is used to freeze T-1000, but the shattered pieces come back together to reform the T-1000. The T-1000 is eventually defeated by forcing him, with repeated shots from a high-powered rifle, into a pool of molten metal. The Terminator who has helped John and Sarah knows he must be destroyed too or his technology will be used to create more. Sarah sadly lowers their Terminator friend into the molten metal as he is unable to self-terminate.
The third installment, T-3 or Terminator: Rise of the Machines brings us to John Connor as a young adult. It also introduces a new Terminator foe, this time a nearly indestructible female Terminator, T-X. This movie is filled with chase scenes and vicious fighting as John Connor and the young lady we find is to become his bride, Katie Brewster, try to evade the newest Terminator.
Once again the same model of Terminator who tried to stop Sarah from even conceiving John, the T-101, is back to help. He has once again been sent from the future, this time by Katie, to save John Connor. Katie and John come to realize that Katie's father is in danger of aiding in the beginning of Judgment Day by implementing Skynet. Katie's father is killed in an assault and the initial rise of the machines at the base where he served. The Terminator takes John and Katie from the base to an underground bunker created by the government for high ranking officials in the event of a nuclear attack or some other catastrophic event. The Terminator gets John and Katie into the bunker at the cost of his own "life". Once inside the bunker John and Katie realize all their efforts had been in vain. Judgment Day had happened anyway.
T3 ends with John and Katie unsure of the future and who else may have survived Judgment Day, which leads us right up to the newest installment of the Terminator series. All in all, based on the history and mythology of this series, it is easy to understand just how hard it is for true sci-fi and action movie junkies waiting for this newest Terminator movie. Terminator fans await the new Terminator 4: Terminator Salvation, for the answers to the questions we were left with after T-3. Only days now until the release - I can hardly wait.
