Learn Why Online Poker Has Exploded In Popularity

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Playing poker online has become an incredibly popular activity throughout the world. Online poker eliminates the need to gather a group together and physically congregate; instead, you can simply enter the virtual world and play as much poker as you desire. You can even play online with friends and strangers alike. More variation is offered in online poker than in any other type, and the vast amount of options available make it hard to get bored.

Online poker has become such a phenomenon that casinos, which have real poker tables, have installed video poker machines to accommodate those who are used to online play. In fact, casinos are losing a fair amount of business due to the fact it is inconvenient to reach them. Convenience is perhaps the greatest advantage of online poker, as one can play from the comfort of their own home instead of arranging an out of town trip just to visit a casino.

With a casino, you often have to pay an entrance fee, and you must wait a good while before having an opportunity to play. One has instant, continuous access to an online casino, and it is possible to play over twice as many hands online in a given amount of time than in real life, as everything is done automatically instead of by hand. Additionally, the only money you need to spend is on betting; there are rarely any fees.

It is easy to get carried away and lose a lot of money in a casino. Some people have lost their savings, cars, or even homes! Online poker has strict limits that prevent this kind of thing, and thus is perfect for compulsive gamblers or people who are apt to go too far. You will not find any no-limits games online. The reason real casinos have more lenient limits is because they need to make more money to cover their operating expenses, but since online casinos have much lower costs, simply due to their existing online, they can afford to set lower limits.

Players have options as to which betting limits they would like to utilize, in order to fit their own personal budgets and skill levels. The levels of customization and flexibility in online poker far exceed that of real-life poker, which has lead to large numbers of poker players permanently making the switch to the virtual world.

Recently, many poker websites ceased allowing United States players to register, due to a law that was passed back in 2006, called the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act. Many organizations are fighting the law and it will hopefully soon be repealed. The Act does not specifically ban Internet gambling, but rather the transfer of funds from a financial institution to a gambling website. A multitude of smaller poker websites still allow United States players, and while many of them are purely for fun, others allow real money games.

As a US citizen, participating and wagering money in online poker is a gray area, but since the law is not targeted at actual players, there is essentially no risk. The primary reason the UIGEA was put in to effect was that the government was not receiving taxes off of Internet gambling, and wanted to put a hold on it until they could find a way to tax it.
