Are The Only Wimbledon Tickets Left For Tennis?
The word Wimbledon usually conjures up one of two things, either the world famous tennis championships or the ubiquitous Wombles. There is however much more to the London constituency than litter picking fluff balls and a game of tennis. The area has been known for football, rifle shooting, horse racing and speedway. If you are thinking of buying Wimbledon tickets for a sporting event or the Womble museum, we are here to help you find the best places to go.
Wimbledon is a prestigious suburb in the borough of Merton and thanks to it's close vicinity to central London attracts plenty of attention from prospective home buyers. There is a cosmopolitan atmosphere which is bolstered by an influx of visitors during the summer months for sporting events. The Common itself is also a popular destination for residents and visitors alike. The area is a designated site of special scientific interest and of course home to the fictional characters The Wombles.
The windmill situated on the common featured in the hit children's television series and is now a museum, but unfortunately not for Womble paraphernalia. The Wombles were considered well ahead of their time as their message was about clearing away rubbish and recycling, and some Wombles fans believe that the common could be host to a Wombles museum that promotes green issues. For now, there are no Wimbledon tickets for a Womble museum as the only one in existence is on the World Wide Web.
The major and most obvious sporting event is the Wimbledon tennis championships. Getting Wimbledon tickets is a notoriously difficult procedure due to the popularity of the event. To get tickets for tennis, fans need to enter a public ballot, queue overnight for allocated public tickets on a first come first served basis, or buy hospitality tickets. Obviously every year there are thousands of disappointed tennis fans that miss the opportunity to buy Wimbledon tickets, but do sport lovers find tickets for other events easier to buy?
Wimbledon Football Club were once a non league team, but have since risen to professional status and even won the FA cup during the 1980s. However buying tickets to see the team play will take you well away from the area. They are now located over 50 miles away due to the change in football regulations for seated stadiums. This move was not popular with the folks of 'don, and as such, a new team was formed AFC Wimbledon. Confusingly, the club are based in nearby Kingston, making it impossible to buy Wimbledon tickets for football in the suburb.
Wimbledon tickets for the National Rifle Association are just as hard to come by as the Womble, tennis and football tickets as the club have also relocated out of the area. That was back in the late 1800s though. It is however an interesting reflection on the sporting background of the area. In it's heyday the event was on for as long as 2 weeks and attracted over 2000 people. At this point it was considered too dangerous to be held on Wimbledon Common and was moved to Surrey.
The other sport Wimbledon has been proud to host has been speedway. The Stadium was the place to buy Wimbledon tickets for this exciting sport, and there was also a chance to bet on a few greyhound races when cars weren't whizzing around the track, but unfortunately after 2005 when the 'Dons last won a season, there were troubles with the leasing of the stadium and there is no longer any racing taking place.
It seems that the only Wimbledon tickets available now are for Tennis, and after the massive amount of money that has been injected into the new retractable roof, we hope that the sport sticks around for a whole lot longer than the others.
