Football Tickets - What is the UFL?
Retail stores are making cutbacks. Large companies are cutting costs. The NFL commissioner even took a drop in pay because of the economy. While it may not seem like the ideal situation to start a new pro football league, fall of 2009 will mark the beginning of the United Football League. The league will feature four teams to begin with, New York, Las Vegas, Orlando and San Francisco. According to the UFL, their mission statement is as follows: "To fulfill the unmet needs of football fans in major markets currently underserved by professional football by providing a high quality traditional football league comprised of world class professional football players. The UFL will serve the communities with pride, dedication and passion, and uphold a leadership role in the development of football worldwide. The UFL will provide every fan with an affordable, accessible, exciting and entertaining game experience."
The UFL was founded by Bill Hambrecht, Tim Armstrong and Bill Pelosi. Hambrecht is a co-founder of Hambrecht & Quist in the 1960s and formed his own company, WR Hambrecht + Co., in the 1990s. The Princeton graduate is the director of Motorola Inc. and also stands on the board for many other companies. Armstrong runs the North American advertising sales, operations and commerce teams for Google. Prior to Google, he has worked for Snowball.com, Disney and Starwave. Pelosi is the husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. He has over four decades of finance and management experience and sits on the board of many prestigious organizations. Other important figures in the new league are commissioner Michael Huyghue, vice president of football administration and legal affairs Matt Couloute and chief operating officer Frank Vuono.
Three of the coaches of the inaugural season, Dennis Green, Jim Fassell and Jim Haslett, have already been head coaches in the NFL. The fourth coach is Ted Cottrell. Green will be coaching the San Francisco team. Green has been the head coach for both the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals. He has also coached at Stanford and with the San Francisco 49ers. Fassell will coach the Las Vegas team and coached the New York Giants to the Super Bowl in 2000, proving himself as a coach. He has also coached with the Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders. Haslett, who will coach the Orlando team, was the head coach for the New Orleans Saints and has also coached with the Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams. He also was a player in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. Cottrell, who will coach the New York team, has coached for the likes of the San Diego Chargers, the Bills, the Jets and the Vikings.
The UFL will feature some of the top players in the world who have yet to prove themselves on a national stage. The league will be played outdoors with similar rules to the NFL with 11 players on each side. The areas for the teams were chosen because of the areas ability to support pro teams. Players from the UFL will not be allowed to sign in the NFL during the UFL season, but they can move to the NFL at the end of the season. No matter what league you like, you can find football tickets at a leading online ticket reseller.
