NCAA Football Tickets - Quarterback Decisions
One of the toughest decisions for many elite college quarterbacks is whether to leave school early for the National Football League. Now that the top five quarterbacks in the NCAA ranks have all made their decision, let's take a look at whether each one made the right call.
Tim Tebow, Florida: Tebow decided to return to Gainesville for his senior season. Tebow's NFL future is uncertain, as some scouts wonder if he has the chops to make it as an NFL passer. Some think that Tebow will have to switch to tight end or h-back in order to make it in the league. The offense he plays in at Florida makes him a unique player on the college eve, but he won't be able to get away with a lot of the things he does on the pro level. His lack of downfield accuracy has many scouts concerned, as does his slow release and mechanics. Tebow has the chance to become the greatest college football player of all time with an opportunity to win his second Heisman Trophy and third national title. He made the right call in coming back for his senior season. He's the biggest draw for NCAA Football tickets in the nation. Verdict: Right decision.
Sam Bradford, Oklahoma: Bradford probably would have been a top three pick in the draft had he opted for the NFL, so you've got to question his decision to stay. He had the chance to go number one, and probably would not have fallen very far had he not. His stock can't really go any higher, as he had the finest statistical season we've seen in a while this year. Still, losing a national title game can make you want it more. Bradford should use this season to put on some weight and work on playing under center more. He should be a top pick whenever he enters, but his stock can probably only fall from here. Verdict: Wrong Decision.
Mark Sanchez, USC: Sanchez had the NFL bug and just couldn't resist heading to the league. He's going to go in the first round and will probably be the second quarterback off the board, after Matthew Stafford. Still, had he stayed one more year at USC, he probably would have been the number one pick in the 2010 draft. Verdict: Wrong Decision.
Colt McCoy, Texas: McCoy narrowly missed out on the Heisman and narrowly missed out on playing for a national title, so it's no surprise he's coming back. I really believe that he felt snubbed in the Heisman voting and he felt that his team was snubbed because of a last second loss to Texas Tech (Michael Crabtree will surely haunt his dreams all offseason). McCoy was not a hot name among NFL scouts, though, despite his stellar performance in 2008. Verdict: Right decision.
Matthew Stafford, Georgia: Stafford didn't have the greatest season at Georgia, but injuries and a lack of talent around him hurt his performance. Still, he's got the big arm and physical tools that NFL scouts drool over, and he's got a great chance to go number one. His decision to leave was almost a no-brainer, especially when running back Knowshon Moreno decided to go pro as well. Verdict: Right decision.
