The Emergence Of Vietnamese Football Fans

There is nothing unclear when we use the word King of sports to call soccer, or football in Vietnam. It is loved everywhere in the world, including Vietnam. Although Vietnamese football is still in a very low level (at the 135th position in FIFA ranking, February 2009), there are still a huge number of football fans from the cities to the country side.

In the last days of December 2008, when National Football Team of Vietnam won Thailand's and got the VFF Cup, some foreigners express their surprise seeing the way Vietnamese fans celebrate the victory. Vietnamese fans, in general, are both lovely and hateful with their own characters.

I can state that Vietnamese fan is one of the loveliest fans in the South East Asia. If you were in Hanoi at the nights of December 21st, 24th and 28th, you would have to utter "Oh My God." The roads are filled by the red of national flags, banners, fans' shirt and everything can be decorated.

People gathered in an infinite crown along the stress, shouted, sang the songs, shook the other's hand and hug everyone they meet. Some of them climbed onto the electric poles and sang there. The whole city seemed to be crazy because of a victory - the victory of National Team. Those are Vietnamese's fans always overenthusiastic, heartfelt and a little bit crazy.

They always follow their National Team in each match, cheer by their heart even when the players are playing very bad. They save money and leave their work out to go to the stadium. They even pay the high price for illegal tickets so that they can go into the stadium, where they show their motley clothes to cheer their team. With some of them, football is not only a part but also the whole of life.

However, in some way, Vietnamese fans are very hateful. The first problem I want to show here is the hooligans. May be they also love football, but the way they express their love is unacceptable! In some matches of V-League 2007 - 2008, the fans of two team fight each other right after the match ended. There are too many people took part in the disorder that even the police cannot do anything.

Whenever the umpire makes a controversial decision, some hooligans keep the habit of through everything they have to the umpire when they fell disappointed. Some try to get into the grass area and hit the umpire. What those hooligans need is only a victory, even without and fairness.

The second problem can be easily given is the way to celebrate victories. In the night of Dec 18th, after Vietnam got the victory, about 50 emergency accidents occurred. The reason is illegal racing! Some young people never given a thought of the consequence before they start racing in the roads. It's very dangerous not only for them but also for the others. One more problem is gambling. Many and many people, including the members of the Party, play gambling base on the final score of each match. If those problems are solved, Vietnamese football fans can be lovelier.

One of the power sources of the clubs and teams is their fans. It's very clear that Vietnamese fans love football very much, but it could be better if each of them make themselves some changes. A better football environment would appear, and I am sure that our players would play better in this environment.
