Fuerteventura - the Peaceful Island
Each of the Canary Islands are very different, with their own natural beauty and character, with each offering a very different holiday experience. Fuerteventura is closest to the African coast and the second largest island after Tenerife.
Fuerteventura is perhaps the most laid-back of the 7 Canary Islands, enjoying large expanses of space and freedom, and has an almost magical feel, calming and relaxing the senses. It is an ideal holiday destination with its year-round sunshine and mild, dry climate, on the same latitude as Florida and Mexico. It has crystal clear waters and turquoise lagoons, home to a large variety of marine life, including rays, turtles and a huge variety of different fish.
There are over 150 beaches - some of the best in Europe, ranging from the black sand and pebble beaches of Pozo Negro and Las Playitas, to the soft pure white sands of El Cotillo. Climb the huge sand dunes of the Parque Natural just outside Corralejo and see the endangered Houbara Bustard in its native habitiat. Walk along the wide sandy expanses of Sotovento where you may be the only soul, or visit in July/August to take part in the World Windsurfing Slalom event where man pits his skills against that of nature at its best.
Travel through the island and discover strange twisted contours and landscapes created by volcanic eruptions. See the endemic Barbery Squirrels known locally as chipmunks as they scamper around the countryside, and see the multi-coloured herds of goats wandering freely around and more plentiful than their human counterparts!
For those wishing for something to do, there are plenty of activities and "things to do" for visitors to any of the resort areas, from Corralejo in the north, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma and Jandia in the south. Take a quad or bicycle safari or view the mysteries of Fuerteventura on horseback. Wind, or kitesurf, diving or boat excursions are all available and are great fun.
Experience some local cuisine, from the reknowned Majorero goats cheese, delicious goat or rabbit casseroles and lots of locally caught fish including Cherne, Vieja, Morena and Mero. Try ropa vieja (old clothes) which is a stew traditionally made from "left-overs" but in reality is made to include meats like, rabbit, chicken, beef and pork, together with chick peas, peppers and paprika - a filling and tasty "tapa".
Shopping is good, with designer labels, local gifts and souvenirs far cheaper than many other European destinations as the Canary Islands are Duty Free
The location of Fuerteventura also has the added benefit of being close to its sister islands of Lanzarote at just 15km and Isla de Lobos at just 2km, easily accessible by daily ferries from Corralejo. Gran Canaria can be reached by ferries departing from Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable, but requires at least a 2-day stop.
For a relaxing or active break, Fuerteventura has it all.
