Insiders Travel Guide to Hawaii

Hawaii is one of the most sought after travel and vacation destinations in the world. The islands are beautiful and tropical. People who don't want to travel outside the United States find that this state gives them what any other tropical area would - culture, warm water and weather, beautiful scenery and a great time.

Hawaii has six major islands. They consist of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the largest island of them all, Hawaii. The island of Hawaii is commonly called the Big Island. It is about the size of the state of Connecticut and is the youngest of the islands, about 800,000 years old.

Planning Your Vacation to Hawaii

When planning a vacation to Hawaii, more travelers are choosing to stay in privately owned vacation rental homes for both comfort and price. Whether you choose a hotel or vacation home with an ocean view, or a villa in the countryside, you will find your vacation in Hawaii very refreshing with multiple opportunities for adventure, sightseeing and relaxing. You will also find that each island offers a unique personality.

Hawaiian History

To appreciate Hawaii to its fullest extent, travelers are encouraged to learn about the history of Hawaii before they arrive. In 1778, Captain James Cook landed on the island called Kauai at Waimea Bay. He named the archipelago the "Sandwich Islands" in honor of the Earl of Sandwich.

Captain Cook was the man responsible for opening the doors to the west. Unfortunately, he was killed just one year later on the Big Island of Hawaii in Kealakekua Bay.

The state of Hawaii was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959, making Hawaii the 50th state of the United States of America. This group of islands was formed from past and current volcanic activity.

Current volcanic activity can be found on the Big Island of Hawaii, while all volcanic activity on all the other Hawaiian Islands has been dormant for thousands of years.

At about 1,860 miles (3,000 km) from the nearest continent, the Hawaiian Island archipelago is the most isolated grouping of islands on the planet. The entire Hawaiian archipelago chain is 1,500 miles long with the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands disappearing beneath the ocean's surface due to millions of years of erosion.

Vacation Activities

The Hawaiian Islands offer a scenic paradise with a rich history and a vast variety of activities to keep you busy. As you know, surfing was started in Hawaii and the Hula dance was also originally from there. Vacationers can take helicopter rides over cliff and canyons, they can visit Pearl Harbor to view the USS Missouri and Arizona Memorial.

They can take surfing lessons, scuba or snorkel, or simply bask in the glorious sun on the many beautiful beaches. There are may other usual places to visit as well, shopping malls, golf courses, museums and art galleries, even a zoo. You will find, however, that the cost of shipping goods to these islands usually makes the prices for daily essentials, more expensive.

You will find certain groceries and fuel that are well beyond what you pay in North America. But if you plan accordingly and budget well, you will find that you can have a good time no matter what.

Hawaiian Weather

The warmer and drier months in Hawaii are April through October, during which Hawaii has temperature ranges of 75-88 degrees Fahrenheit. A Hawaii vacation during the winter months is a pleasant 68-80 degrees.

Some islands, like Maui, are relatively dry, while Kauai is the wettest island of them all. Year-round trade winds make for an entire year of great vacation months.
