What to Do at the New Ponte 16 Complex

The Ponte 16 complex is a casino - resort complex built over 2.3 hectares in Old Macau, featuring a luxurious hotel, delicious dining, refreshing sundowners and aperitifs, and easy access to all of the most important sites in Macau.

One of the main reasons that we travel overseas is to experience other cultures, the history of parts of the world other than our own. Otherwise we could just cloister ourselves in our bedrooms, for many fewer dollars (and much less interest and enjoyment!) Macau was one of the first European colonies in the Orient, and certainly the last.

Portugal handed it back to Chinese administration at the eleventh hour before the new century, on December 20, 1999. A large section of the Macau peninsula, also known as old Macau, has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site. The ruins of St Paul, A-Ma temple, Macau tower and the peninsula's old ferry terminal are all close by.

You can see how Chinese and European cultures mix together in statues like that of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, which stands close to the ocean and near the Sands Casino and MGM Grand. In downtown Macau and old Macau you can also see the Moorish Barracks, Lilau square, Mandarin House, Se Cathedral, St Dominc's Church, and Sam Kai Vui Kun temple, which are among the dozens of world heritage sites that are listed in the city.

The buildings and streets that make up this protected environment in downtown Macau are only minutes walk from the VIP clubs and roulette wheels of the Ponte 16 casino. Phase 1 of the Ponte 16 casino was opened in February 2008, and forms the major part of what will be a 150-gaming table, 320-slot machine, and 5-VIP room complex.

Baccarat, craps, roulette, poker, and blackjack are some of the old favorites that the casino offers, along with some surprising and thrilling unusual games to try your hand at. The casino also often has promotions and extra tournaments like the recent 5-Dragons slot tournament, with gold, diamond and jewelry prizes - along with the winnings from the slot machines!

If you are well and truly ready to just sit and soak up some sensory treats, there is an all-Russian troupe of dancers, musicians and singers live on stage in the complex daily. They are a whirlwind mixture of jazz and pop music, ballroom dancing and Latin moves, with glamorous costumes and enchanting voices.

The troupe is on stage (on a rotating roster!) through both the afternoon and the early small hours, and make for one of the truly unique experiences of downtown Macau.
