Used ATV - Utility ATV Vs Sport Quad: Which Is The Best Bike For You
When you begin looking at the different kinds of quad bikes that are out on the market, you'll come across the utility and sport models. Many people eliminate the utility class of these bikes based mainly on their appearance. Yet, there are other reasons for the differences between the utility and sport ATVs that you should keep in mind if you are searching for a new ATV to purchase or when you want to ride.
Features Of The Utility ATV
When is the best time to look at a Utility ATV instead of a Sport ATV? If you plan to do any work or care to travel into an area that's not too well known, then you might want to consider the Utility ATV. These kinds of bikes can make it through rough terrain and mud that Sport quads lack the ability to do. What gives the Utility quad the ability to make it over the terrain that the Sport quad seems to lack? Some aspects include the bike's weight, size and low-end torque. Those who go with the Utility ATV have the option four-wheel drive. This optional feature makes it easier for the bike to navigate hazardous terrain.
One impressive feature on the Utility ATVs, called a locking differential, helps the bike get out of deep mud holes and other hazards where traction is a cause for concern. This differential helps to do one of two things: First, it makes all wheels on the bike turn at the same speed and secondly it shifts torque to wheels that are not catching.
When you look at the Utility quads, you'll notice that many of them will have an independent suspension system on each wheel. This suspension system helps the bike to keep constant contact with the land, thus keeping you in control no matter what terrain you are on. This suspension helps riders by insulating them from trail bumps that may otherwise hurt or injure them. It's for this feature alone that many people purchase a Utility quad especially if they plan to use it for farm work or hunting.
Features of the Sport Quad - Why Some People Favor Sport Quads over Utility ATVs
Are you the type of person who loves the feel the wind in their hair or simply want to get ahead of the pack? If so, then you'll want the speed and acceleration that the Sport quad will give you. You'll also be able to take the corner like you never believed possible. These machines were designed for quick acceleration, speed and to be run for long periods at fast speeds.
One of the biggest complaints of Sport quads is their stiff suspensions and aggressive gears. However, these can be adjusted to fit your style. If you want a softer ride, you'll have to put up with less performance out of your ride and deal more with body lean. When you look at Sport ATV, you'll notice that you can easily go airborne and come down. Some people who ride Sport ATVs can do jumps that will put them at up to 100 feet into the air or do a black flip using a small, maneuverable Sport ATV (not something recommended for beginners!).
Utility ATVs were once designed for working conditions but have been further enhanced for the ordinary, every day rider. Sport quads are also being designed for the recreational rider, giving them a basis for appeal. There are advantages and disadvantages to each kind of ATV. However, Yamaha introduced the Wolverine in 2006 which was the first quad to bridge the gap between the two kinds using desirable features of the Sport quad and Utility ATV. Since then most manufacturers have followed suit.
When you want to have fun off-road, each vehicle has their advantages and disadvantages. Sport bikes allow for speed and handling while Utility ATVs are bigger, slower and heavier yet much more comfortable. It will depend on your taste and kind of riding with what you decide to go with. However, if you want the best of both types, a quad such as the Wolverine can make an excellent choice.
