Be Creative When Planning Valentine Breaks

It's that time of the year again. No sooner have the Christmas decorations been pulled down and packed away than the windows in the high street are being filled with paraphernalia for another big day; Valentine's Day. Yes, the snowmen and reindeers are replaced with love hearts and a new section of cards appears on the shelves.

We seem to celebrate every bank holiday or special occasion with more gusto than ever these days. The New Year fireworks have to be bigger and brighter than the previous year and the opening ceremony of every sporting occasion has to have more famous names involved and more elaborate entertainment on show. But is that really necessary? Do we have to go one better all the time?

If we take that approach to Valentine's Day we'd be buying bigger cards each year, more chocolates and champagne and moving further away from the real reason behind the occasion. Valentine's Day isn't just about having a huge party; in fact it could be argued that it's not about that at all. It's about showing the person you love with small but not insignificant gestures and gifts how much you care for them.

So, with that in mind, this year why not forget about chocolates and champagne altogether and instead go for something a little different but no less memorable. Valentine breaks are a great way to show someone your feelings for them. If Valentine's Day is about anything it's about taking the time to be with someone, and what other time of the year is basically providing you with an excuse to do exactly that?

Valentine breaks are a great opportunity for couples to spend much needed time together in different surroundings and celebrate the past while looking to the future. They don't necessarily have to be for unmarried couples either. In fact married couples need a Valentine break more than most; if you throw in the fact that there may also be children in the marriage then the argument for a Valentine break is compelling.

There are lots of companies that now cater for the demand in Valentine breaks and once you start looking there are plenty of romantic, exciting and unusual offers to choose from. It pays to look around and choose something that matches the personality of both yourself and your partner. Are you sporty, interested in the arts or would you like to be pampered? Here are a few suggestions to help with your search for the perfect Valentine Breaks.

Walk this way - Getting away from it all and having a much needed Valentines break together if a huge part of the occasion for many. If you like the outdoors and enjoy walking you could plan a weekend away in one of the more remote but picturesque parts of the country. The Lake District is a good location full of hotels, pubs and restaurants but never far away from a country walk or park worth visiting. Cornwall's south coast is also a great retreat for couples looking to escape the daily routine.

A Work of Art - London is a great place to take Valentine breaks. It's also the place to be at the moment if you're interested in modern art. Driven by artists like Damien Hirst, London is now on a par with Paris and New York in the art world. There are plenty of hotels to choose from and some of the bigger galleries like Tate Modern and The National Portrait Gallery have exceptional restaurants attached to them; perfect for a romantic meal for art lovers.

Take It Easy - Many country houses have received a much needed shot in the arm from the health and fitness industry. By transforming old buildings into health spas they have tapped into a growing market that can provide relaxing and healthy Valentine breaks for couples wanting to spend a weekend with one thing in mind; relaxation. Many places now include everything you can wish for including, staff trained to perform massages, beauty treatments and fitness workouts.

Whatever you choose to do be creative and make your weekend Valentine break one to remember.
