Understanding the Spring Fling
Once the snow has begun to melt away and the sun begins to shine down on what has been for so many months a cold and dark land many people find that they too melt a little of their own iciness off.
The bulky sweaters and long underwear all get shoved into a bin on the highest shelf of the closet while the shorts, tanks and swimwear make it into the light.
What exactly is it that happens during this time of year to make so many people begin looking at romance and physical encounters that will keep them smiling until summer? Why is this season sometimes associated with having love on your mind? For the most part the answer is our very own Sun.
When people go for long periods without sunlight, or very limited amounts of it, they begin to feel less outgoing and more withdrawn. This can make feelings of romance seem extremely far away and nearly impossible at times, especially if depression sets in as it does for so many people during the winter months.
When the sunlight begins pouring into the daily routine more regularly many people find that their moods are greatly affected. This can cause many people to become more active, leave their home more often and feel the need to socialize.
Another large contributor to spring flings everywhere is simply the heating up of the weather. Many people tend to wear less clothing during warmer months and the revealing clothing worn by some naturally leads to sexual thoughts.
Understanding the main change then during the spring months is really just an adaptation to a brighter and warmer environment can help to answer the questions about why so many people tend to think of having a fun and carefree romantic encounter during this time, but it does not explain well why so many of the relationships formed during this time tend to be so brief.
There are several theories about the mating habits of human beings and more about the social habits that tend to go with them; it can be very difficult to determine the exact cause of these temporary relationships. Some of the most commonly accepted causes for a spring fling:
* Breaking Away from Winter: After months of waiting for warmer weather some people feel the need to get back out into the world and act a little friskier than usual. Basically this is simply bottled up desire looking for a quick way of alleviating the buildup.
* Social Overload: During this time of year many people celebrate the onset of warmer weather by throwing parties or attend social gatherings aimed greatly at acting a little wild. With so many interactions taking place, it can be difficult to place a great deal of energy into any single relationship.
* Taking Flight: Once the warmer weather seems to be at hand a great many people get the itch to travel or move to a new place. For this reason beginning a serious relationship may be less likely to happen because whether the location is being left or perhaps only being stayed at temporarily, forming attachments isn't preferable.
* School's Out: One Week: Though this time offers a break from studies it is not yet the end of the work for the year and as such only offers a temporary distraction. A great many students have no wish to form serious relationships when so many end-of-the-year activities are still likely to take up so much time.
Another interesting note to take about the spring fling tendency in social behavior is that spring is not a natural breeding time for human beings. If a woman were successfully impregnated during this time period she would give birth in the colder months of the year. Though not nearly as much of a concern in today's society, early humans had to worry about the changing months because of water and food supplies and how they related to the changing seasons.
While food supplies were often low during these colder months it would not have been an ideal time to give birth and for this reason springtime, to this day, is still not a prime season for mating so much as it is for giving birth.
For those individuals looking for a serious relationship during the early spring months it may be best to steer clear of any social activities that revolve heavily around including masses of strangers. While this may be a great way to spend a vacation, it is often not the best environment in which to find romance.
Quick Dating Guide for a Spring Fling Atmosphere:
* Be prepared for large groups of social gatherings
* Try not to take anyone too seriously
* Have fun, but don't wear your heart on your sleeve
* Stay hydrated and never leave your drink unattended
* Try to attend social events with trusted friends and keep an eye on each other
* Don't count on any phone numbers being legitimate
* Never believe anything coming out of someone who's swaying a lot on dry land
* If you think it's a bad idea drunk, your sober self will probably agree even more
* Remember that the sun is great, but it can kill you too, use sun screen
* If you can't pick it up, don't drive it intoxicated
* Make sleeping arrangements before you head out to the party
* Bring protection, because you can always choose NOT to use it
* Above all: remember that you have to return to your normal life; don't do anything that might spoil what awaits you at home.
