There are ups and downs, the interference of the family she is living with, the family of the young man thinks she is not worthy of him, and other problems and concerns continue to pop up in an effort to keep them apart.

The story will usually end with the couple getting together, overcoming all of the circumstances keeping them apart. True love reigns supreme and they live happily ever after.

The common theme in the Harlequin romance novels is what the reader wants. They want to escape from their own reality and to be transported into a different time where they can imagine themselves as the orphaned young woman being saved and loved forever by the young man.
