Wedding Planning Can Be Stressful - Worldwide

Lately, I realized from numerous wedding discussion groups and forums that it there has been a worldwide trend of increasing stress for couples who are planning their wedding. In this article, we are going to examine the various factors which contribute to this pressure and the ways to overcome them. Below are some of the factors that to-be-weds face when planning their wedding.

Common concerns for bride:
1. Wondering if they have made the right choice?
2. Coping with the parents (especially the mother's expectation).
3. Coping with the stress that comes from work and planning the wedding.
4. Concern of their weight and facial look.
5. Concern with new adaptation to the new family.

Common concerns for groom:
1. Cashflow issues.
2. Coping with the stress that comes from work and planning the wedding.
3. Concern about relationship between wife-to-be and mother.

I have faced some problems myself as I have my way of handling things, which may lead to undue stress. I have the habit of always trying to solve problems myself and I try not to let it affect my family, including my wife. Such way of coping is not good for relationships between couples. Couples should be able to confide in each other, sharing the burden of the problems. Wedding planning should involve many, and not just the wedding couples. That being said, I have 6 simple yet effective tips to help you manage your wedding stress better.

1. When approached with a request from a wedding vendor, give yourself some time to think over what is really being asked of you. Make sure you fully understand what you are committing to (a white or a light pink dress; pink instead of white flowers; 150 guests to cater to and not 60) before you blurt out "Sure, no problem." You have to know that any harsh decision on your part will result in problems that will snowball into a catastrophe at the later stages of the planning.

2. Allow other people to take over once you have decided how you want your wedding to be. Once you have a clear picture of how things are going to be, delegate the task to each individual handling them. Make sure you give clear instructions, because things usually screw up due to the lack of communication between the planner and the helpers.

3. When shopping for wedding dresses with your spouse and family, be very specific about the dates and time you can be available. Two hours of dress shopping might be fun and productive. A four hours might be torture for you. Learn to be protective of your time - it is a valuable commodity that you have in limited supply. When you say "yes" continually to others, you are actually giving your commitment to that them, and failure to do so would tarnish your reputation.

4. You are in charge; you call the shots. Tell yourself you will not give in no matter what when the vendor gets insistent about your needing crystal vases or special chocolates or any extra you don't want or feel you need. Repeat something like "I will not give in, I will not give in" to remind yourself. When people take advantage of you, the most serious repercussion is the irritation you feel with yourself. By creating an affirmation, you give yourself the verbal support you need to stay with your decision.

5. Alter a request to make it, or part of it, more manageable. If you not able to complete a request simply tell him/her that you are only able to offer assistance to certain parts of the complete task due to reasons. Most people will be appreciative for any help you are willing to provide.

6. Don't fret over the consequences of saying "no." If you have handled the situation calmly, the backlash will be absent or insignificant. Remember: in general, people don't think about you as much as you worry about what they think. While you're feeling guilty, they are busy finding someone else to do the job.
