Can I Be Sure I'm Saved?

Unequivocally yes! If you are unsure about your salvation, there are a couple of possible explanations:

1. You aren't saved.

2. You are saved, but not walking in the victory God has given you.

3. You are saved, but the devil is messing with your mind.

4. You're backslidden.

Let's address these issues one by one.

1. You aren't saved. If you've said the sinner's prayer, but your life never changed, you probably aren't saved.

You don't have to be in church or at a public meeting in order to be saved. Remember, salvation comes by believing and receiving, not by merely saying a prayer.

The following steps are all that is necessary for salvation:

a. Admit you are a sinner and need God's forgiveness.

b. Believe Jesus died for your sins so that you can have God's forgiveness.

c. Confess what you have come to believe.

The prayer can be our confession, and our way of committing our lives to God, but this is something we actually do after salvation, even if it is only moments after.

Remember, the confession is the expression of what we believe. If you do not believe, you can confess all you want, and you won't be saved.

2. You are saved, but not walking in the victory God has given you. This is the plight of so many Christians today. When we see ourselves walking in defeat, it causes us to doubt our salvation.

The good new is, you don't have to walk in defeat. If you have areas of sin in your life that you can't overcome, you can get victory over these areas.

You may find it helpful to talk with some mature Christians experienced in praying for people with your issues. Remember, Christianity is something we do together, as the body of Christ.

3. You are saved, but the devil is messing with your mind. Before you were saved, the devil's strategy was to prevent your salvation. Once you are saved, his strategy is to make you ineffective.

One way to do this is to get you to doubt your salvation. This will keep you from testifying to others and possibly help them get saved too, and it will cause you to walk in defeat in many areas where Christ intended you to have victory.

Remember the date you got saved--think of it as another birthday. When the thoughts come to you that you aren't saved, save Romans 10:9-10 out loud. Ask God to give you other Scriptures that will help you.

Remember that we all have differing needs, and God may bring to mind Scriptures that specifically help you in a way that they wouldn't necessarily minister to others.

4. You're backslidden. In this state, it's probably not a bad thing to doubt your salvation, as long as that doubt motivates you to do something about it.

Coming back to Christ can be difficult. Some churches refer to this as "rededicating your life to the Lord." It takes humility to admit when we have fallen away and need to come back. However, saving your pride is not worth the price of losing your salvation!

Remember that God is more patient with us than we are with ourselves. Even if you have to rededicate your life to God several times, don't give up!

One of the nicest things God ever said to me was "I know you won't always." It was His answer to my question, "God, why do you keep helping me when I keep messing up?" God hasn't given up on you, and you shouldn't either!

Come back to Him, repent, and He will be gracious to you and allow you to pick up where you left off. (See Isaiah 57:15-19).

If you continue to experience doubts with your salvation, even though you have already rectified these areas, please talk to your pastor or mature Christian. You do not have to live with these doubts!
