How Can Suffering Be A Blessing To Us

Contrary to popular belief or notion, the possession of material wealth is not a blessing but comes as the result of blessing. The pronouncement of good things to come is the blessing, and we usually ask a blessing from those who could make them come true. In this case, they come from the most obvious One, God, because He can make good pronouncements come true.

Blessings come in various forms. God's pronouncement of good things may come in the form of long life, good health, protection from injury, happiness in marriage and family, loyal and trustworthy friends, honor and glory in society, or in the form everybody wants its material wealth. But they come with the work of one's hands and obedience to the Lord. If there is something that God takes notice of, it is the man who is honestly works hard to earn his keep and obedient to His laws.

There are lots of things that God has given us that we take for granted. Oftentimes we are unaware that we have received them because God wanted us to have them. Oftentimes we are disappointed that we do not receive what we asked for not realizing that if we had them they would have been detrimental to our character-building. In many instances God delays our receiving of good things to teach us patience and dependence on Him.

Why Are We Suffering?
When we suffer, we naturally want God to immediately take away our pain. Sometimes, we think that He can be agonizingly slow in solving our problems even after we have prayed for so long. God's ways are different from ours. We need to have complete faith in God, not in our own strength nor understanding. For all is not lost when we will later discover God's plans and purposes for our lives.

How Can Suffering Be A Blessing?
God never puts us into situations which we cannot handle. If such situation is permitted by God, He has a specific lesson to teach us. It could be the best thing that has happened to us. But why? The truth is, it is during these desperate times that we turn to God for His help, and when we do overcome it, we will emerge stronger and wiser, more humble and patient while our faith and relationship with God grew closer.

Romans 8:28 - And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

1. Strengthens Our Faith in God
1 Peter 1:6-7 - In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

2. Strengthens Our Foundation in God
Luke 6:47-49 - I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.

3. Leads to our Eternal Salvation
Romans 8:28 - And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.

4. Deepens our Compassion To Others
2Corinthians 1:4 - who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

5. Develops our Perseverance and Maturity
we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Romans 5:3-4 NIV

Suffering Can Be a Blessing In Disguise.
God always does things for a good purpose. Every trial we face, every situation we encounter whether because of our personal indiscretions or whether it comes as God's disciplinary action helps us develop a stronger character and persevere towards achieving greater relationship with God or towards our goal in life.
