Drug-eluting stents (DES) occur when a metal scaffold is inserted into a coronary artery to prevent it from collapsing. The scaffold may be coated with a pharmaceutical drug that operates on a time-release of the medication. While DES is a popular treatment in today, the adverse effects of DES can be detrimental to a patient and increase their risk of developing life threatening illnesses.
