Turning The Tide With New Technology
There are two sorts of people in this life - those that love new technology and those that loathe it. You can't be someone who doesn't mind it, who just dabbles with it, you can either do it or you can't. In fact, there's even a name - technophobic - for those who have a dislike of new technology.
Of course, things are gradually changing. Silver surfers make up a large proportion of people who use the internet so those who once thought they couldn't use technology are finding that actually they can. It's not a matter of people not being capable - it's simply learning a new way of thinking.
This new technology comes in many forms and is, in the most part, a good thing. It means we get information across the world quicker and clearer. It means we can have things like digital photo frames that will keep our treasured photos in pristine condition for much longer than normal and it means we can share our information and photos with family.
The world has definitely become a smaller place and this has led to families being spread out, no longer within easy reach or regular contact of each other. With the use of new technology, they can stay closer, in more regular contact and with things like webcams and emails, contact is instant, even though it may not be quite the same as the real thing.
One of the latest gadgets to come on the market that will actually be of huge benefit to young and old is the e-reader. This is a digital book that comes in a compact size, about the size and weight of the average paperback. The amount of digital books available is increasing all the time and one of the most famous book stores is working on getting all its titles into a digital format.
You can download digital books for an e-reader at roughly the same price as a paper book. It will be able to hold more books than you are ever going to get through in all different genres. But there are many arguments against electronic books: who wants to stare at the equivalent of a computer screen all the time they are reading? How can you read such small font size? And how can they possibly be as satisfying as having real pages to turn?
Well, for a start, the screen of an e-reader may look like a computer screen but it's entirely different. It is lit differently to resemble normal paper. Backlighting is set so that it is not like a bright computer screen but more like the pages of a book under natural light.
Font sizes are adjustable. You can increase or decrease the size of the writing according to what suits your eyes. They may not have the same feel or smell as a real book but this balances out by the fact that very few people would have the space to store thousands of books! In fact, your average modern home has very limited storage space and the amount of books you could keep would be limited also.
They also come in hugely useful when out and about. You can have your choice of books to read on the train or plane, still with the weight of only one. You can have multiple reference books on your person at any one time without being weighed down and you can load up endless documents for your own reference.
As for the amount of choice you could get - well anything from romance, crime, adventure, sci-fi and thrillers through to non - fiction such as archaeology, architecture, business, computers, education, food, health, languages, medical and sports are available. In fact, any subject you can think of, there will be an e-book on the subject.
