How Technology Is Used Within Water Damage Restoration Service Processes
One of the most important aspects in a business is information. A diversity of records abounds in any form of business. This includes client records, transaction documentations, reference materials, billings, invoices, employee records and a whole array of other data in printed or electronic form. Large companies go to such lengths as hiring a documentation manager to organize and safeguard company documents and information.
However, disaster can strike at anytime and can come through the form of water damage. Floods, hurricanes, breaks in the sprinkler piping system, and even water from fire suppression can cause severe damage to documents. If acted upon immediately, document control managers can still recover these precious data through water damage restoration techniques employed by remedial companies. Damage restoration methods have been developed to achieve up to 100% recovery of water-damaged materials, whether they are in paper, books, film, disks and other storage media.
Since the responsibility of water damage restoration and recovery of important data lies in the hand of the document control manager, he or she should be familiarized with these methods of damage restoration. The following are some of these methods utilized by most remediation companies.
Books (paperback, vellum, or leather bound):
Contrary to popular beliefs, drying books and other bounded materials under the sun is not a good damage restoration process. It can only cause severe deformation, rendering the books useless for future use. The best method for water damage restoration of books is through vacuum freeze-drying, or through the cryogenic freeze-drying process. The key here is to freeze the material while still soaked in water and introduce a slow drying process while inside a vacuum or cryogenic chamber. Using this damage restoration method, books maintain their shape and are prevented from deformation.
The process also involves removal of mold, dirt and grime. If the cause of the water damage was due to a fire, accumulated soot can also be removed. Deodorizing is also performed to remove any unpleasant smells from the floodwaters or from smoke. Some companies offer rebinding and re-jacketing services for books that are already damaged prior to restoration.
Documents, Blueprints, Maps:
Documents in large paper formats would require vacuum freeze-drying during its damage restoration process. Soot from a fire is also removed, as well as mud or dirt from a flood. Deodorizing would also be performed to remove unwanted odor. For some documents that are already damaged prior to restoration, document managers may opt to have them scanned and reproduced, which the restoration company can also perform. Large volume of documents can be relabeled, re-indexed and re-organized by the restoration company after document dying has been completed.
Microfilms, Microfiche, Audio/Video Tapes, X-rays:
Damage restoration can also be performed for information on films. Air-drying will be performed for this material, usually during the re-spooling process which is required to ensure all layers of the film or tape are completely dry. Damaged housings can also be replaced by the remedial companies as well as relabeling. X-ray films have the tendency to adhere to each other when water damaged. These will be separated and dried individually.
Magnetic Disks and Disk Drives:
Similar to film and tapes, magnetic disks will be dried through an air-drying process. The disks would have to be removed from their casing and dried separately. After drying, information from these media would be replicated using new disks.
Information is vital to the success of a particular business. Losing valuable information and data would be similar in magnitude to damages in structure and other tangible properties. With this water restoration techniques, document control managers would still have a fighting chance of recovering potentially lost data critical to the survival of their business.
