Let's specifically discuss how this relates to cancer.
The medical establishment considers a tumor or area of cancer to be a localized condition and orthodox medicine treats it locally with chemotherapy, radiation or surgery.
On the other hand the alternative approach considers that the cancer is a systemic one that originates in the entire body. 
As you can see these two approaches are totally different from one another. What this means to the doctor practicing alternate medicine is that to treat just the area affected by the cancer is totally wrong. He feels that the whole body needs to be under treatment.
The alternate approach feels that to only treat the affected area is to only delay the reappearance of the disease at another point in the body, which in fact is normally the case. 
It is obvious that cancer cells are different than normal cells. The immune system has the ability to tell the difference between a cancerous cell and a normal cell and the primary function of the immune system is to eliminate and/or destroy any cell or condition that it (the immune system) deems to be not normal.
This is evident in transplant surgery. For example in heart transplant surgery the biggest problem is the body into which a new heart is implanted is rejection. In the beginning of heart transplant surgery many patients died because their body would not accept the foreign heart. This was all because the immune system detected something not normal in the body in which it was in control of.
The orthodox medical establish now intentionally lowers the immune systems function so that there will be less chance of a rejection. Of course this puts the patient at risk of a host of other diseases, but it appears to be necessary.
So now we know the strong or normal immune system keeps us healthy and free of disease, we can now see why a cancerous condition could develop if the immune system has been weakened substantially.
Now it should be obvious that the treatment of cancer must include a procedure to stimulate and strengthen the immune system to the level that it can target and destroy any cancerous cells that may develop. This means the whole body is under treatment and not a local area where a tumor may be located.
The only question left is "How to stimulate the immune system to the point that it can either destroy any cancerous cells or keep the body free of cancer in the first place".
During the 1970's at Loyola University extensive laboratory research was going on with regard to this exact question. The result of those years of research has generated a new word for the vocabulary namely "Laetrile" or more commonly called vitamin B17.
Over the years Laetrile has become a common reference to a cancer treatment approach that does not have FDA approval. Just because the FDA does not approve does not mean that it is not effective. This is due to a lack of understanding on one hand and many other non-medical factors on the other hand.
The word Laetrile actually has be misused and many references to it are not correct. The compound it refers to is Amygdalin. Believe it or not Amygdalin was first used by a Chinese herbalist named Pen T'Sao in 2800 B.C.
Amygdalin is found in many seeds, beans, and other fruits and vegetables the most famous one being the apricot seed. The common notion is that the apricot seed contains cyanide therefore it will kill a human. Be is known that many plants contain CN (cyanide) as that is what protects the roots from insects. 
In 1952 Ernst Krebs, Jr. completed a process where he synthesized the apricot kernel in an effort to make it safe for human consumption. He patented this compound as "Laetrile". The purpose of this process was to take advantage of an enzyme system which was shown to be present in malignant tissue. This enzyme has the capability of activating the release of the cyanide that was contained in the Laetrile at the tumor site or in the presence of cancerous cells.
Enzymes play a very important function in the human body. More than 2,000 enzymes are currently known, but only a little over 200 have been crystallized. 
One of these enzymes is "rhodanese". It appears that if a tumor contains cancer there is very little rhodanese and the cyanide is allowed to destroy the cancerous cell. However if the tumor is NOT cancerous then there is an abundance of rhodanese. When the cyanide molecule comes in contract with the normal cell the rhodanese neutralizes the cyanide and causes it to become inert and discards it through the urine waste channel.
With this statement I believe I have answered the question as to why the cyanide contained in the Laetrile does not harm the person that is consuming it, in fact if their body contains any cancerous cells it may be destroyed.
