Have You Tried Writing a Traditional Western Adventure Novel?
Writing a novel can be tough at best, but the writing of a western novel requires extensive knowledge of the time period. You cannot base your knowledge on what you have seen on the movies or television. If you do not have the knowledge you need to write a traditional western adventure novel then you will have to do some research.
You will need to have a good basic knowledge of the happenings in the day-to-day lives of the people of the time era living in the old west, and you will need a basic knowledge of early American history. These are two key components in the writing of a western novel. Many of the avid western novel readers will be able to tell within the first few pages whether or not you have both of these basic knowledges. These are the people who will make up your audiences.
The lifestyle of those living in the old west was very primitive and they dealt with hardships, struggles and battles on a regular basis. These troubles came from the land they were eking out their meager existence on or from adversaries. Their adversaries not only included Indians, but also the unscrupulous white men who were bent on acquiring their wealth by means of threat or thievery.
In order to tell the story of those people long ago you will also need to have knowledge of the tools, equipment and weaponry of the time. Just as an example, how to load and fire a certain gun, the feel of that gun, the kick and the noise of that gun, the effect of the bullet fired from that gun on the intended target, and the range and accuracy of that gun. These pieces of information will help you bring your story to life for your reader.
The geography and the condition of the land during that time period are also important when laying the background of the storys location. You may need to know the wildlife indigenous to the area at that time, even though they may not be as prevalent today. Also many of the bodies of water have changed with the times. There may have been water then where there are dry riverbeds today. Also by including bits of the language spoken during the time will make the story more real to your reader. You want them to feel as though they are actually there.
When you create your characters you will want to keep in mind the attitudes and behaviors of the people of the time. You will want to have a strong, main character that the reader can identify with. You want the reader to transform that character into a person he or she can relate to on a personal level. Then you will want to create a solid story line with plenty of excitement and adventure along with some twists every now and then. By incorporating all of this together with the use of words and making the story come alive for the reader is a sign of a great writer.
Many people believe that in a library full of books nothing can best a great western novel. The old authors of great western novels are riding off into the sunset and fewer and fewer authors are taking their place.
